My Annual Christmas Tree Decorating Dilemma

One of these years I’m just going to do it. I’m going to resist my need for tradition and release myself from the habit of staying true to my box of handmade ornaments and meaningful old decoration I’ve collected from loved ones over the years. Yes, one Christmas I’m going to decorate my tree with brand new shinny blue ornaments. I say this year after year but for some reason I just can’t bring myself to change despite this  fantasy and putting up  a second tree to satisfy my need for a new and blue  seems like I’m cheating on my traditional tree. It’s my annual Christmas tree dilemma and this year is no different!

 When it comes down to it, everyone knows I’ll pull out the boxes of decorations, some from my childhood, others made by our children and grand children, and yet others made or given as gifts by family or friends and next thing you know my tree is  decorated with a miss matched, well worn, mosaic  of a life time of Christmas memories.

Part of me will love it  but a little  part of me will be saying to myself and likely to my husband more than once  “Maybe this year I should have just gone with new and blue,” but we both know I could of, maybe even should of,  but I don’t and likely won’t.  In a weird way, not decorating my tree in new and blue has become its own  tradition because when it comes right down to it, I can’t really imagine my tree any other way.

  2. I think it’s easy to get tied into the past when it comes to happy holidays such as Christmas, due to the happy memories we have.

  3. It’s interesting how we get tied into the past. I remember when I first moved out and had my first Christmas tree – it was so freeing to make it own. Yes – good idea to make wise choice right off the get go just in case!! Merry Christmas

  4. Ah, I know that dilemma. My parents bought a bunch of gold ornaments about 20 years ago and we use them every year, to this day. They’re not even handmade – just plain, store-bought decorations we’ve been using for years. I always wanted to get creative and experiment with our Christmas tree, but I don’t think my parents will ever allow that. I can’t wait to move out and have my very own Christmas tree… but then I wonder, will I buy&make all decorations the first year and then reuse them year after year, never willing to let go of the past? I’m a sentimental person, so that’s probably what’s going to happen. I need to make a wise choice when I buy and make that original set of decorations… cause it probably won’t change for years 😀

  5. We have 2 trees nither are showcase worthy but make us smile and its all that matters. For my childrens ornaments I started displaying them on the fireplace/mantle in a small wooden crate. I get to bring them out unwrap them display them and enjoy them still.

  7. Thanks Autumn – you are right. Last night I was looking at an old star ornament that was my dads favorite and I spent some time thinking of those happy days and I was really grateful that a little ornament could bring back so many special memories. Merry Christmas

  12. Thank-you! Silver, pink and green sounds beautiful. I did a bit of parring down myself a few years back with some of the bigger decorations for around the house – old wreaths and so forth, you know how there’s always that box of things you keep but never use! Generic store bought decorations are very beautiful (thus my ongoing dilemma) they give you joy now and in far in the future they will become someones special, vintage decorations so it’s all good right! Have a Merry Christmas!

  18. Funnily enough we moved a few months ago and I looked at all the xmas decorations and parred them back. I will now confess I had a blue bag of decorations and red and gold. They have all gone and I have kept the silver and pink and green. I love your tree though as it has been decorated with love and memories. Where as my decorations are generic store bought ones.

There is just something about having your Christmas tree covered in more than just “Christmas ornaments”.   21. There is something to be said for traditions—! I remember one year I hung my melted wax…soldier/angel/lamb/andsanta(my grandmothers) despite the fact they were unrecognizable….Lovely tree…and do what your heart tells you. (I actually found the same ornaments at an antique show—and they are lovingly displayed.
